I recently heard this old Chinese saying in a daily mentoring message from Darren Hardy. “The temptation to quit will be the greatest just before you are about to succeed.” This saying really touched my heart especially since my recent Diabetes diagnosis.
January 25, 2017 marks one year since my Type 1 Diabetes Diagnosis. On January 26, 2016 I found myself in ICU with DKA, otherwise known as Diabetic Ketoacidosis. This is typically a sign of the onset of Type 1 Diabetes! My pancreas had quit working and I am now insulin dependent the rest of my life.
As I lay in the hospital bed my husband and I had several conversations about me selling my business. On the surface I agreed that it was probably a good idea to move in that direction but in my heart it made me sad. I love my work, I love my team and most of all I just love our clients. Hearing, supporting and celebrating their entrepreneurial journeys is what makes me tick!
Ever since I was a little girl I have been involved in my community. At age 10 I had a newspaper route in Alaska and won awards for top sales and great customer service! I raised money for non-profits getting people to pledge money for bike-a-thons, skate-a-thons and beauty pageants! When I was 15 I won Miss Hospitality for the state of Alaska!
Once home and settling into my new lifestyle I realized that although I was sick, Diabetes is a very manageable disease and I began to think that it wouldn’t be necessary for me to have to choose my work or health. I could actually do both if I found balance and fully leveraged the talents of my team members!
By July, we were actually making more doing less. I couldn’t believe it! And by mid-July I had the vision of starting this magazine! I did the research and presented the idea to the team. Everyone was on board! Including my husband! He saw the spark in my eyes and knew this was going to be great for me!
My diabetes diagnosis has caused me to reflect on my life. It has caused me to eliminate the things that were wearing me down. It has caused me to change my eating habits and look at exercise in a different light. And most of all it has caused me to embrace what I love the most: My family, My Community and My work! This is how diabetes is saving my life!
